(…) politicians take up their designated function of assigning meaning – an assignation to politicians of an almost messianic function of renewing society. Not simply problem-solvers or representatives, these politicians view themselves as the creators of a new collective will, as carriers of an almost religious ‘mission’ which it is their duty and entitlement to realise. This leads to the elimination of modesty and ‘realism’ in politicians’ sense of what they can achieve vis-à-vis society, and the elimination of any felt need to remain responsive to social forces that either are or should be beyond their control.
